Tithing is more than a financial transaction—it’s a spiritual practice that invites us to trust God with our resources. When we tithe, we are putting God first in our lives and acknowledging that he is our provider. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate our faith and obedience, responding to God’s generosity with our own.
What Is Tithing?
Tithing means returning the first 10% of your income to God, a practice that has been around since the Old Testament (Leviticus 27:30). While the percentage isn’t a strict requirement for Christians today, it’s a good starting point, and many people use it as a way to prioritize God. Tithing is an expression of faith, trust, and obedience—it’s about the heart behind the gift, not the exact amount. (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Why Should I Tithe?
- To Trust God: Tithing teaches us to rely on God as our provider and not on our own abilities. Proverbs 3:9-10 tells us to “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.”
- To Put God First: By giving the first part of what we have, we show that God is our priority. (Matthew 6:21)
- To Support the Church: The money given through tithing helps fund the church’s mission, ministries, and outreach efforts. (Acts 4:32-35)
- To Experience God’s Provision: God promises to care for us when we faithfully give, reminding us that he is our ultimate provider. (Malachi 3:10)
How Do I Start Tithing?
Pray for Guidance
Ask God to guide you as you begin tithing, trusting that he will provide and help you prioritize him in your finances. Reflect on your current financial situation and ask God to show you how you can give.
Decide on the Amount
While many people start with 10%, consider what God is calling you to give. It might be more or less, but the key is obedience and faith. If necessary, start with a smaller amount and grow from there. The goal is to be consistent and faithful over time.
Set a Regular Giving Schedule
Decide how often you want to give—weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Once you’ve set your schedule, make it a priority to give first before spending on other things. Proverbs 3:9 tells us to prioritize by giving God “the best part of everything you produce.”
Where Should I Tithe?
Because Deuteronomy 14:23 tells us to bring our tithe “to the designated place of worship, your tithe should go to your church. Your tithe is what makes ministry, outreach, and care possible!
10% isn’t a limit. Sometimes God stirs our hearts to give above and beyond a tithe. Additional gifts can support other ministries, organizations, and causes that share Jesus and extend his kingdom. As you give, look for places where God is at work and where generosity can make an eternal impact.
What if I Can't Afford to Tithe?
- Start Small: If you’re struggling financially, don’t feel pressured to give 10% right away. Begin with a smaller, manageable amount and grow in your giving as you’re able.
- Trust God with What You Have: Even small amounts can have a big impact when given faithfully. (Mark 12:41-44)
- God Honors Faithfulness: He will provide for your needs as you put him first. (Philippians 4:19)
- Seek Wisdom: If you’re unsure about how to manage finances while tithing, look to a trusted financial advisor or your church’s leadership. Consider signing up for LCBC’s Money Matters newsletter to receive monthly guidance on finances and tithing.
