Before humanity ever accomplished anything, God gave humanity something: identity. Adam and Eve had not planted a garden, named the animals, or accomplished a single task when God declared that they were made in his image. Before they did anything for God, they belonged to God. They were naked and unashamed—they knew who they were and there was nothing wrong with it.
The world often teaches us that our value comes from what we produce, what we achieve, or what others think about us. But the first thing God says about humanity is not what they can do—it’s who they are. They are his image-bearers, designed to reflect his character and represent his presence in his creation.
One of the most important details in the story is that God gives Adam and Eve their identity before sin enters the world. Their worth was never dependent on their performance. Even after sin broke the world, God continued pursuing them. The gospel begins with the truth that we were created with dignity and purpose, and God's rescue restores what sin damaged.
Heart
Many of us spend our lives trying to prove that we are enough. We chase approval, success, relationships, accomplishments, or recognition because we believe those things will finally tell us who we are.
Where have you allowed your accomplishments, failures, or other people's opinions to define you more than God's voice?
Hands
Today, write down three things that are true about you because of your identity in Christ—not because of what you have accomplished.
When you catch yourself looking for approval, pause and remind yourself: “My identity is received from God, not earned from people.”
Pray: God, thank you that my value comes from you. Help me stop chasing identities that never satisfy and teach me to live as someone created, loved, and known by you. Help me reflect your image today in the way I speak, work, and love others. Amen.
