Beginning A Conversation About Trusting Jesus

Your child may be asking a lot of questions about Jesus — questions you might not feel prepared to answer. That’s okay! This is a starting point for you and your child to explore faith together.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

If you’ve never trusted Jesus as your Savior, this could be your moment too. As your child takes this step, you can take it alongside them.

The Bible tells us that we don’t automatically have a relationship with Jesus or go to heaven by:

  • Being good or doing good things
  • Going to church
  • Giving
  • Getting baptized as a baby

Instead, God promises that anyone can be part of his kingdom forever by trusting in him—and experience life-change with him today!

These videos will help you lead your child through the simple steps to follow Jesus and understand how sin separates us from God. It’s as easy as A-B-C.

A = ADMIT THAT WE HAVE SINNED

  • Everyone sins. When we sin, we fall short of God’s perfect standard.

  • Ask your child: What is sin, and how is it different from just making a mistake?

‘For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.’ Romans 3:23
B = BELIEVE THAT JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS

  • We need someone to rescue us from our sins. Jesus gave his life to pay for our sins, and today he offers forgiveness and new life. When we believe that he died on the cross and rose again, he saves us.

  • Ask your child: What has Jesus done for you? What is he doing for you now?

‘But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.’ Romans 5:8
C = CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THE GIFT OF FORGIVENESS

  • The best gifts come from people who love us. Jesus offers us the gift of forgiveness and life with him. Accepting that gift shows Jesus that we want a relationship with him. We call this Trusting Jesus. His gift of forgiveness can never be lost, and it means we’ll live with him forever in heaven and experience his transformation in our lives here on earth.

  • Ask your child: What does it feel like to receive a gift?

‘If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’ Romans 10:9

Prayer

You can use this prayer with your child as they take the step to trust Jesus. They can read it, repeate it after you, or pray in their own words:

“Dear Jesus, I admit that I’ve messed up and sinned. I believe you died for my sins. I choose to accept your gift of forgiveness and want to trust you. Amen."
